Video Game Review: Idle Champions of The Forgotten Realms

Formats: PC (Epic Store & Steam) /Android /Apple /Xbox one (Series S/X) /PS4 /Switch

Played on: PC / Apple & Xbox Series X

In its most simplest form Idle Champions is basically a left to right screen side scrolling shoot ‘em up. You have a party of champions that have to complete a certain adventure up to a certain amount of levels. Of course it’s not as simple as that…

You start with a small roster of adventurers, some you will know if you read a lot of AD&D stuff, and some you won’t. More Adventurers become available as you complete quests, purchase with money, purchase with gems, purchase using Patron rewards, or unlocking Electrum chests.

Each character attacks at a different rate, and has ultimate attacks and special abilities that are unlocked as you level them up. Levelling up costs money, and to get money you kill foes. Each character levels up at different rates, and you also have a slot that determines how much damage you do if you click your mouse or tap your screen. Every character also equipment slots, these slots start off empty, and must be collected and then upgraded. This is done in the same way as characters (found in chests or bought).

Every adventure has a specific Deity associated with it, and when you either complete it or quit it because you can’t get any further, you will get Favour. Favour can be used to improve the amount of damage you do, give extra health, extra gold, extra gems, or other boon. Some favour is specific to the Deity only missions, some are for all missions.

If your party dies it is simply pushed back to a level were it won’t. Then you can just build up your money to level up enough to press on.

Gems

Every five levels you have a boss fight. When defeated this will give you money and a certain amount of gems. 50 gems can buy a silver chest and 500 gems a gold one.

Chests

The three main types of chests you encounter are Silver (buy for gems, or sometimes dropped by bosses), Gold (buy for gems, or very rarely dropped by Bosses) , and Electrum (free – you just need the codes, which are easy to find online). Electrum chests have a good variety of treasure in them, and sometimes you get special codes that will give one or more adventurers.

Familiars

Bought with gems or cash money, familiars mainly serve three purposes. They can be placed in front of the party where they attack (but cannot be attacked), doing damage equal to your click/press damage. They set of either a specific ultimate, or can walk back and forth setting of a random one. Or finally they can be used to automatically level up the attack or adventurer slot you put it on.

There are other thing you can unlock, such as Modron cores, Patron chests, Patron items, Magic items, the list is massive. I may at a further date go in to these at a different date if there is any interest.

I found the game quite frustrating to begin with, but once you start unlocking characters and abilities it becomes very addictive. I have only touched upon all the different thing that you can do.

My Rating: 9/10
