Retro Movie Review: Starship Troopers

When I think about my favourite movies of all time, one film stands out above the rest: Starship Troopers. Directed by Paul Verhoeven and released in 1997, this movie is a masterful blend of high-octane sci-fi action and an intriguing vision of a future society. It's a film that not only entertains but also presents an ideal vision of how service can grant citizenship, creating a structured and thriving society.

Never pass up a good thing

Set in a future where Earth is ruled by a militaristic regime, Starship Troopers follows the journey of Johnny Rico, played by Casper Van Dien. Rico starts as a naive high school student who enlists in the Mobile Infantry to fight against a deadly alien race known as the Arachnids.

Now, I could talk about the political connotations of this movie, but that’s been done to death. Instead I want to focus on the movie and its plot. In short, it’s fun, exciting and has some of the best one liners in any sci-fi movie.

You Apes want to live forever?

Starship Troopers presents a future society where citizenship is earned through service, creating a disciplined and cohesive world. This vision of society is one where civic responsibility and duty are paramount. The film depicts a world with no litter, where crime is promptly and justly punished, and where people are fit, healthy, and dedicated to the greater good. It's a refreshing take on how futuristic societies are often depicted. There’s none of the depressing ruined future scenarios like we see in films like Bladerunner for example, and it contrasts sharply with today’s often chaotic world.

The only good bug is a dead bug!

The special effects in Starship Troopers were revolutionary for their time and still look impressive today. Unlike other sci-fi films of the time I have to say it probably stands up the best and after a recent rewatch of the Star Wars prequels I reckon it even has those beat.

The CGI Arachnids are terrifyingly realistic, and the battle scenes are intense, bloody and gritty. Verhoeven's direction ensures that the action is both thrilling and horrifying, highlighting the brutal reality of war while delivering the adrenaline-pumping excitement that I love in an action sci-fi movie.

You see a bug hole, you nuke it. Understand?

The characters in Starship Troopers might seem straightforward at first, but they quickly become memorable and engaging. Casper Van Dien's portrayal of Johnny Rico is iconic, capturing the essence of a hero who is both brave and flawed. Denise Richards as Carmen Ibanez and Dina Meyer as Dizzy Flores add depth and emotional resonance to the story. Michael Ironside, as the tough and charismatic Lieutenant Rasczak, delivers a performance that adds gravitas and complexity to the film.

I'm doing my part!

One of the reasons I love Starship Troopers is its ability to balance campy fun with serious themes. The movie effortlessly shifts from over-the-top action to deeper societal reflections, creating a unique tone that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. Verhoeven's approach ensures that the film never takes itself too seriously, even as it tackles significant issues. This balance makes Starship Troopers a standout in the sci-fi genre.

Everybody fights, nobody quits!

When Starship Troopers first hit theatres, it received mixed reviews, with some critics missing its deeper elements. However, over the years, it has been re-evaluated and is now recognised as a cult classic. Its insightful depiction of a service-oriented society remains relevant, and its reputation has only grown stronger. For me, it's a film that I can watch over and over again, always finding something new to appreciate.

Starship Troopers is more than just my favourite movie; it's a film that perfectly encapsulates everything I love about cinema. Its thrilling sci-fi action, compelling vision of a structured society, memorable characters, and unique tone make it a timeless masterpiece that has inspired countless sci-fi books, video games and movies since.

Whether you're watching it for the first time or revisiting it, Starship Troopers offers an experience that is highly entertaining.
