Movie Review: The Creator

After watching the dire Zack Synder Rebel Moon recently I was hesitant about giving another 2023 sci-fi movie a shot. I am pleased to say that Gareth Edwards The Creator went some way to redeeming the genre for me.

This is a film that doesn't just dazzle with its CGI; it invites us into a world where the lines between humanity and artificial intelligence blur, challenging our perceptions in the most delightful ways.

Let's talk visuals first, shall we? Greig Fraser and Oren Soffer have outdone themselves with cinematography that's nothing short of breathtaking at times. Despite working with a budget that’s modest by today’s sci-fi standards, "The Creator" stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the big boys, delivering a visual feast that's both futuristic and relatable. The urban landscapes, with their "Blade Runner"-esque neon glow, are a character in their own right, painting a vivid backdrop to a story that’s as complex as it is captivating. If the budget for this movie was just £80 million and the most recent Marvel movies are £300 million I’ve gotta ask, just wtf are Disney spending that cash on? The Creator’s fx blows anything the house of mouse has churned out the past few years by a country mile.

At the heart of this movie is John David Washington's portrayal of Joshua, an undercover special forces agent, and his interaction with Alphie, the AI child played with a poignancy and depth by Madeleine Yuna Voyles. Washington brings a nuanced performance, capturing the essence of a man haunted by loss yet driven by duty. Voyles is a great little actor, embodying the innocence and complexity of her character with a grace that belies her years.

Edwards, along with co-writer Chris Weitz, weaves a tale that’s not just about the spectacle of war between man and machine. It's a story that delves into the heart of what it means to be human. The film doesn’t shy away from asking tough questions about AI and our relationship with technology, making it a thinking person’s sci-fi flick.

But it’s not all serious business. Edwards’ direction ensures that "The Creator" is infused with moments of pure cinematic joy, blending elements of action, sci-fi, and drama to create a film that’s as entertaining as it is thought-provoking. There's a kinetic energy to the action sequences, a testament to Edwards' skill in creating a film that's as visually arresting as it is emotionally engaging.

"The Creator" is a sci-fi spectacle that’s both a feast for the eyes and food for thought. Its blend of stunning visuals, compelling performances, and a thoughtfully crafted narrative makes it a standout film. This isn't just another sci-fi movie; it's a poignant exploration of the human condition set against a backdrop of a future that feels all too possible. Whether you're a sci-fi aficionado or just someone who appreciates a well-told story, "The Creator" is a film that deserves your attention

I give it a 8/10
