Movie Review - Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver
There are few cinematic experiences that have truly tested my patience and tolerance for narrative ineptitude, but "Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver," secures a high spot on that list. Zack Snyder's latest offering isn't just a disappointment—it's catastrophically shit.
Somehow, Rebel Moon Part Two is even worse
The plot, if one can charitably call it that, picks up with the wooden Kora (Sofia Boutella) and her stupid bunch of tropey allies defending their moon colony against dark forces. This could have set the stage for a riveting battle-laden drama; instead, what unfolds is a torturous drag of pointless flashbacks and narrative fluff that serves no purpose other than to test the audience's endurance. The film stretches its thin premise over an excruciating runtime, filled with hollow expositions and painfully sluggish pacing but its worst crime is that it’s just boring.
Zach Synder is a Hack!
The screenplay is a disaster. Thrown together by Snyder alongside Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten, it reads like a first draft that should have been tossed into a bin and set on fire rather than filmed. Dialogue stumbles from one cliché to another, with characters spouting lines that evoke cringes more than cheers. The mythological dumps, aimed at world-building, only succeed in building confusion and disinterest. Nothing is original, everything is stolen from better franchises. To anyone who defends Snyder and thinks he’s a great moviemaker, I must question any and all of your choices. Aside from the Dawn of the Dead remake, Watchmen and 300 the guy has not made a good movie. How he keeps convincing the execs at Netflix to keep throwing money at him is frankly a mystery.
Visually, Snyder usually admittedly excels, but here even his trademark flair feels like a gaudy cover-up for the lack of substance. Yes, there are a few visually arresting moments, but they're drowned out by the overall sense of visual monotony and narrative vacuity that plagues this film.
Character development like in the garbage first movie is staggeringly even more non-existent. Kora's backstory is intended to add layers to her character but ends up feeling as shallow as a puddle. Boutella tries her best, but she's sabotaged by a script that gives her nothing to work with. The supporting cast, including some genuinely talented actors, is utterly wasted, their characters as forgettable as the dialogue they're forced to deliver.
Stop giving this man money!
The critical reception has been overwhelmingly negative, and rightfully so. The film not only fails to deliver on the promises of its premise but also manages to lower the bar set by its already lackluster predecessor. Critics and audiences alike have panned the film for its uninspired plot, stilted performances, and Snyder's misguided direction, which turns what could have been a sci-fi spectacle into an interminable slog.
"Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver" is an exercise in cinematic futility. Snyder's film is not just a letdown; it's a stark reminder that stunning visuals cannot compensate for a vacuous story and poor character development. For those curious about how low modern sci-fi can go, this film might serve as a morbid case study. For everyone else, consider this a warning to steer clear of this disastrous space opera. It’s not just a bad film; it’s a black hole of entertainment, sucking in time and energy and giving nothing but regret in return. How the fuck Netflix spent $200 million on this shitshow is sickening. I spent my time watching this crap thinking about how many schools and hospitals such a vast sum of money could be spent on. Are they using these abominations for money laundering?
Needless to say, I give this crap a 1/10.
