Movie Review: Older Gods
I have to admit I’m a bit biased when it comes to this movie as one of my best friends is a producer and acts in it but he’d be the first to say I can be a harsh critic regardless. So, with that out of the way what is Older Gods and why should you give it a watch?
Lovecraftian Horror at its finest
I’m a fan of Lovecraft and Older Gods is a Lovecraftian esque story at its core. There’s an god who according to a great line in the script that even scares the pants off of God himself. The premise is that a group of investigators have been on the trail of a mysterious cult that is responsible for brutal ritualistic killings all over the world in an attempt to awaken their god and essentially blink the world out of existence.
This is where we meet Chris Rivers an American who has travelled to Wales to find out what happened to his friend, the lead investigator of the cult. From the off the movie sets the scene with creepy shots and nerve jangling music as Chris sees hooded figures in the surrounding woods and strange events occur within the cottage itself.
What’s really impressive with this movie is that it was filmed with such a small crew, in a remote place at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. It’s low budget but thanks to the skills of the creators the SFX are impressive and the artwork utilised throughout is great and suitably creepy.
The acting is solid (even my mate puts in a decent performance!) and the plot is engaging with a decent pace and solid conclusion. My only nitpick is with some of the dialogue that can be a bit preachy and a tad over the top at times.
A good horror
If you love Lovecraftian tales, Older Gods is a definite must watch movie. It pulls off the creepy vibe really well and some of the twists are suitably trippy and mind bending. Overall I give Older Gods a solid 8/10 and can’t wait to see what Wagyu films come up with next.
