Excerpt: Chapter VIII, The Fight for Tinaria
Michael pulled hundreds of flyer demons out of the sky, slamming them back to earth. In scores, they came crashing down. Some had died instantaneously, while others were critically injured. Easy picking for brave soldiers, the surviving terrors struggled to lash out at their human attackers. Though still horrified, rushing warriors found some courage in slaying the beasts up close. Even while injured, the beasts lunged at the men.
The key, as the leaders of the battlefield proclaimed, was to prevent the demons from forcing everyone into a death trap. The army fought to push the demons away from the Royal Crux and back into the carnage of the towns. Because Michael had temporarily cleared the skies, archers and crossbowmen above the city rained their arrows and bolts down upon the demons below.
Formidable gunmen in the towns blasted their demonic adversaries with powerful makeshift shotguns. The combat within the townships was ghastly, for alleys filled with the gory carcasses of man and demon alike. Unbeknownst to the military, militia there began using unorthodox methods of keeping their enemies out of pathways, igniting fires and laying explosive traps. The strategy backfired. Searing demons spread the flames to all areas where they stalked, engulfing parts of towns with wild blazes.
Maxim cried frantically as he hacked three flyer demons dead with his flaming sword, “Fires are building up in the east! If the demons don’t squeeze us in here, the fires will!”
“I’m on my last two arrows!” Predella cried over the sounds of war within the Royal Crux. “I’ve got to scavenge for more! Don’t die while I’m gone!”
Michael raced towards the Cathedral of Alchemiei with hopes of defending the innocent from any evil that tried to break through. Predella salvaged some arrows from dead archers as she started to follow him there. She quickly glanced back to find Maxim in the square, almost consumed by the hordes of demons that tried him. His fiery blade twirled and sliced about like a phoenix in the violent night.
As they ran, a crying soldier fell from the sky and would have fallen before Michael’s feet if not for his lifesaving powers easing the fall. He quickly leaned his head up to find more flyer demons littering the sky as before. Predella leaped over flattened carcasses in her pursuit of arrows. The winged demons dropped multitudes of Tinarians from above, having already left scattered pieces of body parts all about the ground in response to Michael’s similar tactic on them earlier.
When Michael saw a small girl drop from a flyer’s claws, he caught her ten feet from the ground by way of his telekinetic gifts and set her safely into his arms, still running for the holy site. Predella fired off a shot, targeting an incoming flyer demon. Utilizing the enchanting force of her bow, the soaring arrow lit up into ice and froze the creature into a statue. Like hail, the demon broke up into pieces on impact.
Seeing that Predella was nearby, he offered the girl to her and stopped in the street with the cathedral in view. He then focused his power to catch all other victims falling from the demons’ cruel maneuver. He shouted for them to head for the cathedral for refuge. Predella used the last of her arrows to cover the people who ran for the holy place as Michael took on the demons that soared above.
