A Journey through Indie Fantasy Part 5: ‘Community’ Dynamics in Indie Fantasy
Today, we delve into the heart of the indie fantasy world: its communities. These are the places where fans and authors alike gather to share their passion, discuss their favourite tales, and ‘support’ one another's endeavours. Yet, like any community, they are not without their shadows. Let's explore both the light and dark sides of these gatherings.
The Magic of Community
Indie fantasy communities are, at their core, gatherings of like-minded individuals who share a deep love for the genre. They are spaces where new authors find encouragement, where readers discover their next favourite book, and where friendships are forged over shared trials and experiences. Through social media, forums, and conventions, these communities can offer invaluable support, feedback, and camaraderie to both seasoned and emerging talents.
The Power of Support
Authors often band together to promote each other's work, share resources, and offer guidance. Book bloggers, reviewers, and fans amplify these efforts, celebrating new releases and hidden gems alike. This collective support system is a driving force behind many indie authors' successes, that in some cases shows the incredible potential of community in elevating individual achievements.
Shadows Amongst the Shelves
However, where there is light, shadows lurk. As in any community, indie fantasy is not immune to the darker aspects of human nature. Cliques form, creating in-groups and out-groups, and leading to feelings of exclusion among newer or less popular members. I’ve encountered several of these groups with one even calling itself ‘The Terrible Ten’ probably due to how shitty they are to those they dislike in the background. You’d also be surprised as to who is a part of such groups, often those who are all smiles and ‘friendly’ are often doing the shittiest things in the background. Think review bombing, orchestrating social media pile-ons and essentially bullying those they see as a threat out of the community altogether.
Nepotism is rife, with certain voices being amplified over others not based on merit but on personal connections, stifling diversity, and fresh genuine talents.
The Sting of Betrayal
The anonymity and distance provided by online platforms can sometimes embolden individuals to act aggressively towards those with differing opinions or to undermine the achievements of others. (Trust me, if I met some of these people face to face and they said the things they’ve said to me online, well, they’d have a trip to the ER). Such actions not only harm individuals but can also fracture a community, creating an atmosphere of distrust and competition rather than collaboration and support. The tribalism of the indie fantasy community is easily the worst aspect of it.
Confronting the Darkness
Addressing these issues requires a collective effort. Community leaders and members alike must foster an environment of inclusivity, respect, and constructive dialogue. It's crucial to establish clear guidelines for behaviour, with mechanisms in place to address grievances and conflicts. Celebrating a wide range of voices, especially those that have been marginalized, can help counteract nepotism and promote a more diverse and vibrant community. Sadly, this is highly unlikely due to the gatekeepers of the cliques not willing to do so.
The Path Forward
The key to navigating its waters lies in balancing open-hearted engagement with mindful awareness of those with less than honest nor noble intentions. By actively working to mitigate the negative aspects while amplifying the positive, the community can continue to be a source of inspiration, growth, and mutual support, which is what we are trying to do with EPIC.
Every community, like every story, has its heroes and villains, its trials and triumphs. The indie fantasy community is no different. It's a living, evolving entity that reflects the best and worst of us. Yet, at its heart, it remains a testament to the power of stories to bring people together, to inspire change, and to create worlds where, despite the shadows, the light of camaraderie and shared passion can win the day.
