1. What inspired the world, characters, or core concepts of your story? Was it a particular event, piece of media, or a speculative scientific idea?
For over 16 years, the seeds of this story have been germinating in the soil of my imagination. It began as a humble attempt at my debut novel, but the sheer magnitude and depth of the world I envisioned held me back, making me feel like a painter staring at a vast, intimidating canvas. My initial spark of inspiration was fueled by my profound passion for biology, a subject I've both studied and taught with fervor for about a decade. This was juxtaposed with my growing unease and skepticism towards the shadowy machinations of the world's sociopathic elite.
As the years rolled on, this story evolved, branching out into a sprawling saga spanning nine novels. Each character, each subplot, and every twist in the tale has been meticulously crafted, drawing inspiration from a rich tapestry of media. From the political intrigue of "Dune" and "A Song of Ice and Fire", the dark fantasy of "Berserk" and "Warhammer 40k", to the post-apocalyptic landscapes of "Mad Max" and "Elysium", my story is a melting pot of influences. It borrows the haunting atmospheres of "Hyperion" and "The Book of the New Sun", the adrenaline-pumping action of "Monster Hunter" and "Attack on Titan", and the intricate world-building of "Final Fantasy" and "The Witcher". Add to this mix the philosophical depth of "His Dark Materials", the groundbreaking narratives of "The Broken Earth Trilogy", and the sheer epicness of "Diablo" and "Chronicles of Riddick", and you get a glimpse into the universe I've created.
In essence, my series is a tribute to all the epic, action-packed adventures that have left an indelible mark on me. It's a world teeming with unforgettable characters, grandiose settings, and meticulously crafted history and lore. I invite readers to dive into this universe, to get lost in its depths, and to embark on a journey that's been 16 years in the making.
2. How did you approach the creation of your main characters? Were they modeled after real-life figures, or did they evolve organically as you explored the world of your story?
The tapestry of characters I've woven into this series is as diverse and multifaceted as the world itself. From their inception, I envisioned a mosaic of individuals, each distinct in age, origin, culture, belief, and even species. My ambition was not just to tell a story, but to offer readers a kaleidoscope of perspectives, allowing them to traverse my world through a myriad of unique and captivating eyes.
As I journeyed deeper into the narrative, these characters began to evolve, almost as if they were breathing, living entities. Some transformed so profoundly that their initial incarnations became mere shadows, while others birthed entirely new personas, adding layers of complexity to the plot and enriching the overarching tapestry. It's as if they rebelled against their creator, choosing their own destinies and carving their own paths.
I often marvel at the autonomy these characters have assumed. They're not mere figments of my imagination, but sentient beings with wills of their own. They've surprised me, challenged me, and often led the narrative into uncharted territories, ones I hadn't even fathomed. In this dynamic dance between creator and creation, I've discovered tales more profound and intricate than I could have ever initially imagined.
3. Science fiction often delves into questions of ethics, technology, and humanity. What central theme or moral question does your story grapple with, and why did you feel it was essential to explore?
At the heart of my series lies an extensive exploration of the human condition: our inherent limitations, the haunting void of existential purpose, and the dangerous concentration of power that humanity always slips back into. These themes, while vast and intricate, are not just the fabric of speculative fiction but are the very threads that weave the tapestry of our real-world existence.
The centralization of power, particularly in the hands of an elite few, stands out as a stark and pressing concern. This elite, often shrouded in layers of secrecy and privilege, wields an influence that casts violent shadows over the masses. Their decisions, often made in secluded boardrooms and behind closed doors, ripple outwards, affecting the lives of billions. It's a chilling reminder of how the many can be manipulated, controlled, and even oppressed by the few.
In a world where technology advances at breakneck speed and ethical boundaries are constantly pushed and redefined, it becomes imperative to question: Who holds the reins of this progress? And to what end? My series delves deep into these quandaries, not just as fictional dilemmas but as reflections of the challenges we face in our contemporary world. By shining a light on these issues, I aim to ignite a dialogue, to challenge readers to question the status quo, and to inspire a collective consciousness about the unchecked power of the world's elite and the potential consequences for humanity at large.
4. How did you approach the integration of futuristic technology or scientific concepts in your story? Did you base them on existing theories or let your imagination run wild?
My narrative is intricately woven with a myriad of technological and scientific concepts, each tailored to the unique cultures and locales within my universe. Rather than adhering strictly to contemporary theories, I allowed my imagination to meld with the foundational threads of known science, resulting in a vibrant mosaic of speculative futures.
Take, for instance, the coastal matriarchy of Wintersvilla. Here, the societal structure is as tumultuous as the roaring seas that surround it. Castrated men live in subjugation, while fierce warrior women, embodiments of strength and ferocity, offer their unparalleled combat skills to the highest bidder. These women stand as bulwarks, shielding the remnants of society from the fearsome hunters and huntresses, relics of a bygone era, now considered the most formidable weapons of the old world.
Then, hidden beneath the very crust of the Earth, lies Downver. A sprawling cyberpunk metropolis, it's a labyrinthine underworld where technology has burgeoned unchecked for decades. The city pulses with life, its streets teeming with danger, innovation, and the relentless hum of progress.
High above, orbiting the Earth, is Astrea. A beacon in the void, this communistic society floats serenely, juxtaposed against the chaos below. Yet, even in the stars, they grapple with their own set of challenges, a reference to the universality of societal struggles.
And the narrative doesn't stop there. The tales of Waru, Vida, and the enigmatic Boreal Kingdoms await their turn in the spotlight, promising readers a journey into realms where technology and ethos are inextricably linked to their histories and the visionaries who shaped them.
In crafting these diverse worlds, I've endeavored to showcase how technology, beliefs, and societal structures can evolve based on historical events and specific influential figures. It's an exploration of diversity, imagination, and the limitless possibilities that the future might hold.
5. The sci-fi genre provides a canvas to depict diverse cultures, species, and worlds. How have you incorporated representation and diversity in your work, and why do you think it’s vital for the future of science fiction?
Science fiction, at its core, is a reflection of our aspirations, fears, and the boundless possibilities of the universe. In my work, I've passionately championed the cause of representation, ensuring that the vast tapestry of human experience is vividly portrayed.
A cornerstone of this representation is the robust LGBTQ+ presence within my narrative. Their stories are not mere subplots or token inclusions; they are integral, vibrant threads that add depth and authenticity to the overarching narrative. Alongside this, my universe is replete with formidable female leads. These characters shatter clichéd tropes, standing tall not as mere counterpoints to their male counterparts, but as independent, multifaceted individuals with their own agency. They are not the stereotypical 'Mary Sues' but are complex, flawed, and incredibly real.
The future of science fiction must be as diverse as the universe it seeks to depict. Historically, the genre has been ensnared in a web of male and cis-centric narratives. These limiting perspectives not only stifle creativity but also paint a future that's monochromatic and far removed from the rich diversity of our world. It's not just about breaking away from the monotony; it's about crafting a vision of the future that's inclusive, vibrant, and truly representative of all of humanity.
In essence, for science fiction to remain relevant and resonate with future generations, it must evolve. It must embrace the myriad hues of human experience and craft them into stories that inspire, challenge, and captivate. Only then can we envision a future that's truly for everyone.
6. Every author has a unique writing process. Can you share a bit about yours? How do you manage world-building, plot progression, and character dynamics in such a complex genre?
My process, while methodical, is also deeply intuitive. It's a dance between meticulous planning and freeflow imagination. The foundation of my storytelling lies in relentless drafting and experimentation. My workspace is awash with timelines, intricate spreadsheets, and exhaustive character dossiers. These tools serve as the scaffolding, supporting the vast edifice of my narrative. But beyond these tangible aids, much of my creation happens in the intangible realm of thought. I often find myself submerged in the depths of my story, allowing the currents of imagination to carry me, letting events unfurl organically, and observing the ebb and flow of character dynamics.
One of my most unique and immersive techniques is the use of lucid dreaming. By consciously entering the dream state, I can traverse the landscapes of my world, engage with my characters, and witness events firsthand. It's as if I've unlocked a portal, allowing me direct access to the very heart of my narrative.
There are moments when the act of writing takes a backseat, and it's the quiet contemplation that takes center stage. Whether it's a meditative hour in the bath or a reflective walk, these moments of introspection often yield the most profound insights and breakthroughs.
In essence, my writing process is a blend of discipline and daydreaming, structure and spontaneity. It's this balance that allows me to navigate the complexities of the genre and breathe life into the worlds I create.
7. What’s next for you after SPSFC? Are there any upcoming projects you can share with us?
The journey post-SPSFC promises to be as exhilarating as the competition itself. As the ink dries on the pages of the third installment of my series, I’ve already started writing the fourth volume.
But writing, while a significant part of my journey, is just one facet. I'm eagerly looking forward to diving back into the vibrant world of book conventions and signings. There's a certain magic in these events—the palpable excitement in the air, the hum of conversations, and the joy of connecting directly with readers. It's a dance of ideas, a celebration of stories, and an opportunity to share the universe of "Mendel's Ladder" with a wider audience.
Engaging with readers, hearing their interpretations, and witnessing their passion for the worlds I've created is an unparalleled experience. It's these interactions that fuel my creativity and drive me to delve deeper into my narrative universe.
