SPSFC 3 Review - Singularity Dawn – In Other Worlds Vol 1. By Dalton Roberts
Singularity Dawn was an entertaining, fast paced palate cleanser of a Sci-Fi that bought a little fun to the end of the world.
It started with disappearing phones, and small objects of little significance. What it turned into was so much more. When Quinn Barlow’s neighbour Kai sends his dog for help, Quinn is sucked into a mystery for the ages. Turns out it wasn’t just phones and wallets, soon people and entire cities are disappearing into thin air. Inter-dimensional portal or the end of the world?
Everyone around them is being called to the mysterious Serpent Mound through their subconscious. The journey seems to be the only thing making sense, the thing that will give them the safe haven they are so desperately seeking. Quinn, Kai and their families try desperately to meet up with each other before the entire world ceases to exist.
Will they make it in time? What happens if they don’t? You’ll have to read it to find out.
Singularity Dawn was a lot of fun. It was quirky, it was fast paced, and it was just what I needed at the time. This 141 page novella packs a punch and it read like bookish popcorn.
While the entertainment value was high, readers looking for a deeper read may struggle with this one. Each chapter lead into the next in a fairly logical succession. Even if the things inside the pages were interesting, the story felt somewhat surface level. There were a lot of characters for a small page count, and it was hard to get invested in any one person outside of Quinn and Kai. The events also happened so quickly it could leave some readers with whiplash.
All that being said, this was a story easily consumed in one sitting and it provided what it set out to do. If you are looking for something quick and enjoyable this one will be for you. However, it will not be going through to the next round of SPSFC 3.
