Book Review: Forgotten Ruin by by Jason Anspach, Nick Cole

Have you ever wondered how much damage an M4 rifle could do to a formation of orks or what military firearms can take down a giant? Maybe you want to know what tactics the US Army Rangers use that would be effective against medieval armies. Forgotten Ruin by Jason Anspach and Nick Cole is a story that seeks to answer all of this.

This Isekai style story about a company of Army Rangers sent to a realm straight out of the pages of Dungeons and Dragons manuals. Your main character, called “Talker” by the rangers and later the people of the fantasy world is the designated translator and communications specialist. He’s an academic turned soldier that is fascinated by the unique twists of language that fill this world.

Despite his desire to learn everything he can about this new world, the Ranger Company is quickly thrown into a fight for their lives. An army of orks and other dark beings quickly surrounds their position. With the almost mythical Forge cranking out ammo and weapons, they hunker down for a fight. Elves, dwarves and wizards join the fight beside the Rangers as Orcs and Giants press the attack.

This whirlwind world of magic and gunfire is a wild journey that pulls the reader in and makes people enjoy every page. If you enjoy epic fantasy and want a new twist to it, this series is the perfect next read. This series has seven novels in it with a spinoff series that is just as enjoyable as the first novel.

The authors of the Galaxy’s Edge series take things to a new level with this series. They worked with current and previous Rangers along with their own military service to get the details right. This leads to a gripping story that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the entire book.
